The induction of the Ampersand project was an experimental collaborative exercise, connecting a variety of artists, their varied practices, use of media, disciplines and experience into a collaborative live exhibition.
Running Friday nights though out October 2010, 10 artists were invited to participate in the production of three panels and one canvas of varying sizes at a local Gastown boutique. Inundated with patrons, a live DJ and photographers; artists were allotted 5 hour sessions per evening. The completed work expresses the variable aspects of the experiment, the outlying cause and effect of the environment, the challenges of its variables, the connectivity, willingness and communicative aspects of the project and its participants; taking the artists out of their natural studio environment, challenging their process not only within a live arena, but into composition with artists they had never worked with, and in some cases never met.
To give the viewer perspective of their independent process, each artist has contributed a self produced piece to the auction showcasing their different, and sometimes contradicting, schools of discipline, style and theory.
Acrylic, oil, collage, screen printing, drawing, brush painting, spray paint and assemblage processes make up the mixed media array of the work with intention to broaden individual creative perspective and experience while connecting people and expanding community.
The value of the collaborative work is found within these precepts; each piece produced out of a unique set of circumstances in a process that can never be duplicated.
The final ampersand evening ended on the halloween weekend, so we had costumes, glow in the dark fangs and Thriller. Great turnout and some of the best collaboration we’ve seen so far, really excited for the auction November 18th at Shudder Gallery. Each artist will also bring a solo piece for auctioning off, as well as the finished 4 collaborative works. Thanks again to all the artists who partook in this experimental project and especially curator Neal Nolan – and to everyone else who helped along the way…

Part 3 of Ampersand – We had a true ‘collective’ of the artistic community, with up to four artists on a canvas at a time. Oh, and even the Mayor of West Vancouver came by!

Commemorating the flag ship store launch and shop alliance between Planet Claire and Die Constant; Planet Claire/Redivivus creative director and curator, Neal Nolan and Alexis Moreau (main designer and founder of Die Constant) will be hosting a live painting exposé. Every Friday night (6pm – 10pm) throughout the month of October at Planet Claire (51 Powell St. in Gastown) we will be challenging our big city’s approach to limited early shopping hours and featuring an open call collaborative production with Vancouver artists.
With average work schedules shoppers in Vancouver are confined to weekend shopping as opposed to other cities like San Fransisco, LA, New York, Chicago and Nashville; with Vancouver contending as a progressive city Planet Claire, Die Constant and artist/ curator Neal E. Nolan are bringing new life to Gastown evenings with a series of events featured monthly through out the fall/ winter season.
At the end of each evening the collaborative product will be printed on a limited run of shirts made available the following week both online here as well as in store at Planet Claire.
November 18th will feature an opening reception and (silent) auction of the completed works at:
